Right. After spending the best part of a year worrying about our budding seminary, I draw aside to create space for more creative things – such as this blog.
It needs more focus, hence a shift from general monastic issues to a fairly specific subject: the ‘new monasticism’. I retain the name ‘african monastic’ because of monasticism’s intrinsic value to our continent – but I’d like now to narrow the scope to the recent phenomenon in contemporary monasticism.

Pleasant to see a blog from South Africa devoted to monasticism. We have an interdenominational list for monastic subjects, traditional and newer forms of monasticism, spirituality, contemplation, info, news, at Yahoo with about 425 members at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monasterion where I’ve posted some South Africa monastic links.

Hello, I just found your blog via facebook. I took a quick look around and really enjoyed several of your posts. The videos from work of the people are excellent. (By the way, I recognized one of the streets they filmed–the Mission district in San Francisco, CA. I wonder if the filmmakers are from there?) Friendship *is* what it’s all about. Although, I suppose the Jesus-kind-of-friendship could get you in a bit of trouble or even killed! Anyway, good to see other bloggers discussing new monasticism.
